VKS for Rail

In 1808, the steam engine Catch Me Who Can reportedly reached 24km/h.

In 2015, an experimental maglev train reached 603 km/h.

The rail industry is all about evolution. So is VKS.

ENSURING YOUR WORKFORCE IS ON TRACK

Rail technology is evolving at an unprecedented speed. Constant evolution is one of the top rail industry challenges when it comes to keeping your manufacturing workforce properly prepared.

Our system helps you train and teach your workforce quickly by allowing you to create visual work instructions that coach your operators through detailed trainings and assembly processes. Once operators have been trained, features such as “Certification Groups” help you keep track of your operators’ qualifications. Once implemented, this feature restricts work instruction access to include only certified operators.

VKS also allows you to request that the shift supervisor confirm that an operator is properly trained for an assembly. The operator’s access to the work instructions will be restricted until they receive the supervisor’s clearance.

ASSEMBLY INSPECTIONS INDUSTRY 4.0 STYLE

Once printed, the inspection manual for the traction converter case used by the Montreal metro is over 200 pages. That is roughly one pound of paper that must be carried around while inspecting a large complex unit. Luckily, the printed guide is only there for emergencies. The primary inspection tool used for this unit is in fact VKS.

VKS’ mobile compatibility allows inspectors the freedom to have everything they need with them conveniently bundled in a hand-held device. Checklists can be completed within the inspection guidebook. Pictures taken with the mobile device can be added directly to the report. Updates to inspection guides are communicated to inspectors automatically.

Using VKS ensures that all your inspection information is recorded in one place, and keeps vital information from getting lost, forgotten or destroyed.

INCREASED PRODUCTION SPEED BY REDUCING PAPER

In 2017, Ontario’s GO Transit public rail system had a reported 57.4 million riders. This number is expected to increase as more people look to avoid urban gridlock. This means more production and more pressure to deliver the product on time.

Capturing and sharing best practices is an important part of increasing your production speed without compromising the quality of your product. By using electronic work instructions, you can document the most efficient way to assemble units and share this information with your workforce. VKS allows you to create clear and detailed work instructions using text, images, and videos.

VKS also encourages a collaborative environment on the shop floor and allows operators to note and communicate their ideas for improvement. Knowing that everyone is completing their task in the most optimal way allows you to focus on optimizing other areas of your process.

VKS in Action

In 2015, Advanced Transit Manufacturing (ATM), a renowned name in the rail industry, started using VKS as part of its initiative to implement lean manufacturing. Today ATM has made tremendous steps towards its goal and credits part of their success to the use of VKS.
